The day finally arrived for the move from our Kentish farmhouse, which proved not to be too traumatic as most of our belongings had been collected in installments over three days spread over the previous two weeks, and had all been packed into containers to be stored at the warehouse. After an overnight stop with family, we set off on our drive to Italy. Leaving at 7a.m. we drove for the whole day, deciding to book into a hotel in the shadow of Mont Blanc, before making the final leg of our journey. On arrival at our rental property in Anghiari, we were disappointed to find it had not been cleaned as promised and there were no instructions on how to switch on the antiquated boiler, therefore we had no hot water. Desperate for a shower after our 1700km drive, we checked in once again to Alessia’s ‘Locanda Fiorentino’ in Sansepolcro.

Refreshed, we tackled the rental property. A plumber was summoned, who switched on the boiler and spent three hours sorting out leaks. The next two days were spent redecorating the kitchen and lounge, transforming them with Farrow and Ball paint. We were ready to take delivery of our life’s possessions. Unfortunately our driver had not taken the simple route through France, but had come by way of Switzerland, which had meant a 3 hour delay on entry and another 3 hour delay on exit. The Italian lads from Florence who were to unpack the road train waited patiently for 4 hours. In the hilltop town of Anghiari where parking is at a premium, the police had allowed us to occupy a block of eight parking spaces for the lorry, which still meant a walk of at least 50 metres to the front door of the apartment with all our furniture, much to the interest of the locals. The trailer was parked further away and the lorry was reloaded with its contents 3 times. It was 11p.m. before the last box came inside – unfortunately this was not everything; another container would have to be delivered 3 weeks later. The following morning Robert flew back to London for his two days teaching at the Royal Academy of Music and to conduct a concert – he will continue to leave me “home alone” for 3 days every fortnight, but there could be worse places in which to be abandoned.

Since arriving in Italy our thoughts were constantly with the task of securing the original property. We stood firm in our determination not to accept less land and be forced into using a geometra we had not chosen ourselves. Finally, after many negotiations the owners of the property -a 75 year old farmer and his wife - signed the compromesso. We paid the deposit, which this time was accepted over a year after we had first viewed the property.
